I think everyone has dreamed of making money from the comfort of their own home; or better yet, making money while traveling and enjoying life. No one wants to be chained to a desk for eight hours a day. With the power of the internet, there’s a way for everybody to make money online.
If you Google “how to make money online” you will find thousands of scamy websites offering get rich quick schemes, so let me be real with you… there is no way to make thousands of dollars by doing nothing. You have to actually put in the work. With that being said, I would prefer to work from home, on my own terms, than work for someone else in an office with a set schedule. If you agree with that, then read on.
Making money online has changed over the years, and it continues to evolve. Some forms of monetization are better than others, but I have included the top five ways to make money online below:
1. Affiliate Programs
Affiliate Marketing is pretty easy, and all you need is a blog and an internet connection to get started. As an Affiliate, you can embed links into the content of your website and social media pages that link to and promote your favorite brands and products. With some programs, you are paid a small amount each time someone clicks on the link, and with other programs you are paid a larger amount when someone makes a purchase. Almost every company has an affiliate program, so think of the brands you love, and then research their affiliate programs. My biggest recommendation with affiliate marketing is to only promote the companies and products that you have actually tried. You want to give your readers an honest review or recommendation of the product, and be able to answer any questions that they may have.
2. Digital Ads
Most people know that banner ads are a way to monetize your website or blog, and we are all used to seeing banner ads on the websites and blogs we visit. A banner ad is the horizontal ad that typically is shown on the top of a website, and display ads are usually shown along the right sidebar. The key to digital ads is to only include ads that will be relevant to your readers. If you write a fashion blog, your ads should be fashion related. If you have a car blog, then your ads should be automotive related. Think about the types of products that your readers will be interested in, and target your advertising efforts as much as you can. You make money with digital ads either based on impressions (how many viewers visit your blog and see the ad), or based on how many clicks each ad receives. Either way, it’s pretty straight forward and an easy way for blogging beginners to monetize their website from day one. Check out Google Adsense, Media.net, Commission Junction, or my personal favorite, Shareasale.
3. Sponsored Posts
Have you ever asked your friend for a recommendation on where to eat, what hotel to stay at, or what brand of makeup they use? Of course you have! Recommendations from friends are coming from a trusted source, so the recipient is likely to try out the brand that you suggested. That’s where sponsored posts come in. Brands use your voice to influence readers and reach additional customers via a sponsored post on your blog. With sponsored posts, you are paid a flat rate to write and share the post on your blog and social media platforms. Sponsored posts should always be written with an honest review and should include a disclaimer stating that you were paid for the post, but all opinions are your own. If you’re looking for brands to work with for sponsored posts, check out Ifluencz, TapInfluence, Pollinate, and Clever.
4. Freelance Writing and Guest Blogging
Many freelance writers can earn up to $1 per word. Of course, if you’re just starting out, the pay rate may be lower, but there is excellent potential with being a freelance writer. Starting a blog is a great way to work on your writing skills, and provides an easily accessible sample of your writing portfolio. Take a look at blogs, both large and small, for guest blogging opportunities as well. Guest blogging is an easy way to make extra money from home while also doing a little self-promotion to get your name out there.
5. Services & Products
If you have a blog, think about what type of services or products you can offer online. If you’re a designer, you can offer web design services, and design logos or templates. You can offer coaching services based on your area of expertise. You can create products to sell on your blog or on an Etsy shop. Do you have something interesting to say? Write an ebook and sell it as a digital download to your viewers. The sky is the limit with this one.
Making money online is 100% possible, and thousands of people have been doing it for years. The key is to be consistent. You may not make much when you first start out, but if you stick to it, you could find a way to make a living online. If you look through blogs, you will see that most utilize a mix of these money making options. Don’t be afraid to focus on one area, and then build up your plan over time.
