How do I start a blog? I hear that question all the time! Starting a blog gives you a personal platform to express yourself on either a personal or professional level. While some blogs are strictly personal – sharing life experiences, family photos, and travel experiences – most blogs are used for business in some way or another. A blog can simply be another avenue of advertising your business by bringing traffic to your existing website, or your blog can literally be your business. If you enjoy writing and want to create an income from home, starting a blog should be your first step.
When I first started blogging in 2009 I spent hours and hours researching how to get started. Luckily for you, this one post will save you tons of time and frustration since I’ve laid it all out in an easy step by step format. If you think starting a blog is too hard, believe me when I tell you that anyone can do it!
Here is the “How To Start A Blog: Easy Step-By-Step Guide” to getting your domain, setting up your web hosting, and installing WordPress in less than 10 minutes. This post may contain affiliate links; however I only promote products I love, from companies I trust.
Here are the quick steps:
- Pick Your Domain Name (you can get one for FREE)
- Set Up Your Hosting Account
- Install WordPress
- Select and Install Your Blog Theme
Pick Your Domain Name
Your domain name is the web address (for example: www.JumpIntoMonday.com). Your domain name can be your personal name or a branded business name. The hosting company that I recommend below will provide you with a FREE domain name when you sign up. Use the handy Domain Name Checker below to see if the domain name you want is available. Keep searching until you find the perfect name for your site!
Set Up Your Hosting Account
Your web host is the server where your blog “lives.” There are hundreds of web hosting companies, however you want to select a company that is easy to use, provides quick website loading times, offers affordable package prices, and has excellent customer service and tech support. For these reasons, I strongly believe that Bluehost is by far the best! I have used Bluehost since 2009, and recommend them to everyone who wants to start a blog or website.
Bluehost offers affordable packages, however my readers (you!) will receive your hosting for as low as$3.45 per month, plus you will receive a free domain name!

Take note of the Installation Details in the upper right hand corner. This is your WordPress log in information. Be sure to write this down and save it, as you will need it for the next step.
Optional: Once WordPress is installed, you have the option to purchase a theme from the Mojo Marketplace. These custom themes provide the overall look and design of your blog. Browse through these, or see my recommendations at the bottom of this post for other great themes to check out.
Bluehost – Step #9
Log into your WordPress dashboard using the log information above. The log in is usually “www.YourDomain.com/wp-admin”. This is where you will design and customize your blog, and write all of your blog posts.
Bluehost – Step #10
Once you have logged into your WordPress account, simply click on “Appearance” (on the left hand menu) and then “Themes” to browse all of the free themes for your blog.
Optional: Purchase A Custom Theme
To give your blog a custom look, and personalize it so it matches your brand, I recommend you purchase a custom Theme. Here are a few awesome websites for you to check out for custom themes:
After you purchase a theme, simply return to your WordPress dashboard and click on “Appearance”, then “Themes”, then “Upload A New Theme” and select the .zip file of the theme you purchased.
